New Partnership for Site Selection Network

The Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA) and the Site Selection Network (SNN) have reached an agreement to provide free site selection consulting services to members of the MDMA through the resources of the SSN. This exclusive agreement allows MDMA members to confidentially enter information about upcoming site searches for new office, manufacturing, distribution and research operations in both the United States and Canada. Once the company has requested a free site selection study, members of the Site Selection Network will be contacted in the area of geographic interest in order to respond, if desired, to the company’s need for information about available buildings, labor market skills, education institutions, accessibility, and other critical site selection criteria. Site Selection Network administrators will then work with the MDMA company to help them better understand the proposals from SSN members and to gather additional information on a confidential basis, if necessary. Once the company has narrowed the search to the three finalist locations, SSN will notify all respondents of the status of the project, whether an area has been retained as a finalist or not, and, if eliminated, the reason for elimination, if known by SSN staff. The Site Selection Network will continue to work with the MDMA member to refine the finalist locations, and conduct on-site field investigation of the proposed locations. In some cased, MDMA members may want to continue to utilize the SSN Network in order to shield itself from public disclosure – in other cases the MDMA member may be able to disclose its identity at this point. Once the company decides to focus on the finalist locations, the MDMA member will be encouraged to work with the SSN member directly in order to expedite information flows and understanding of the nature of the project.

SSN will continue to remain involved in the project as the project progresses through optional labor market studies, demographic analysis, building searches and incentives negotiations, if appropriate. Upon selection of the finalist location, SSN will coordinate public disclosure with the MDMA member as well as the SSN Member’s public relations resources in order to give appropriate credit to all involved and to control media speculation.

MDMA's HISTORY
MDMA was created in 1992 by a group of medical-device company executives who believed that the innovative and entrepreneurial sector of the industry needed a strong and independent voice in the nation's capital. Since its inception, MDMA can claim credit for a number of policy achievements, from the defeat of legislative proposals to foist "user fees" upon the industry in 1993 and 1994 to the development and passage of the landmark FDA Modernization Act of 1997.

FUTURE DIRECTION
MDMA is currently building on its achievements and reputation by extending the association's influence into new areas and by leveraging the combined resources of its members into new and improved services for member companies.

MDMA is also enhancing its current membership services and developing a new set of "bottom-line" benefits for its members. This new World Wide Web site will be a valuable information resource for members and the general public. MDMA members will also soon receive timely updates and policy analyses through advanced communication technologies such as electronic mailing lists. By facilitating interaction within our membership and between our membership and Washington, MDMA is contributing to its members' productivity and adding value to membership.
